The Microsoft Solutions Partner Specialization System Explained: What Certifications Actually Mean for Your ERP Project

When mid-market companies evaluate Dynamics 365 implementation partners, they frequently rely on Microsoft certifications as a quality signal. That instinct is reasonable, but the certification system most buyers are familiar with, Microsoft Gold and Silver partner status, no longer exists. Microsoft redesigned its partner program in 2022, replacing the old tier structure with a new framework called Microsoft Solutions Partner designations. Understanding what the new designations mean, how they differ from the old system, and what they actually tell you about a partner's capabilities is essential context for any company going into an ERP partner evaluation.

What are Microsoft Solutions Partner designations and how did the partner tier system change in 2022?

Before October 2022, Microsoft's partner program organized partners into Competency tiers: Registered, Silver, and Gold. Gold partners had met higher thresholds in performance metrics and customer references, but the system was widely criticized for being relatively easy to achieve through certification stacking and for not adequately measuring actual customer outcomes. Microsoft's redesign introduced Solutions Partner designations as the replacement, organized around six solution areas: Business Applications, Data and AI, Digital and App Innovation, Infrastructure, Modern Work, and Security. Partners now earn a designation in one or more of these areas based on a three-component scoring model that Microsoft evaluates on an ongoing basis.

The three components are performance, skilling, and customer success. Performance measures net new customer additions and renewals in the relevant solution area. Skilling measures the number of employees with active, verified Microsoft certifications in the relevant technical domains. Customer success is the most significant change from the old system: Microsoft now collects satisfaction scores directly from deployed customers rather than relying on partner self-reporting or hand-selected references. Partners must score above minimum thresholds on all three dimensions to earn and renew their designation annually. The redesign was intended to make the Microsoft Solutions Partner designation a more meaningful quality signal than the old Gold tier represented.

What are the Microsoft Solutions Partner specializations relevant to Dynamics 365 implementations?

For buyers evaluating Dynamics 365 partners, the relevant designation is Business Applications. A Microsoft Solutions Partner with a Business Applications designation has met the minimum scoring thresholds for new customer deployment activity, certified staff in Dynamics 365 and Power Platform products, and customer satisfaction benchmarks. This covers the full Dynamics 365 portfolio including Business Central, Sales, Customer Service, Field Service, and Finance and Operations. A partner without a Business Applications designation has not met these thresholds and should be evaluated with that context clearly in mind as you compare options.

Above the base designation, Microsoft offers Advanced Specializations, which require third-party verification of customer references in addition to higher performance and skilling thresholds. The Advanced Specializations most relevant to Dynamics 365 buyers are Finance and Supply Chain, covering Business Central and Finance and Operations implementations; Service, covering Customer Service and Field Service; and Sales, covering Dynamics 365 Sales. Partners who hold Advanced Specializations have been audited by an independent third party and have provided verified customer references that Microsoft has reviewed. This makes Advanced Specializations a meaningfully stronger signal than the base designation alone.

What do Advanced Specializations tell you about a Microsoft Solutions Partner's capabilities?

An Advanced Specialization indicates that a Microsoft Solutions Partner has a documented track record in the specific solution area being evaluated. The audit process that Microsoft requires for Advanced Specializations involves reviewing actual customer deployment records, verifying that certified employees are active and not simply names on a roster who may have left the firm, and confirming that customer references are real, recent, and relevant to the solution area claimed. The threshold is higher than what the base designation requires, and the validation process is external rather than self-reported, which meaningfully changes the reliability of the signal for buyers using it as an evaluation criterion.

For a buyer selecting a Dynamics 365 Business Central implementation partner, seeing a Finance and Supply Chain Advanced Specialization on a partner's profile indicates a higher degree of scrutiny than the base Business Applications designation alone. It does not guarantee a successful implementation, and it does not tell you whether the specific consultants who would work on your project are the ones whose references contributed to the specialization. But it does indicate that the firm, as a whole, has been accountable to verified customer outcomes that an external audit confirmed. That is a meaningful bar that a significant portion of designated partners have not cleared.

How does Microsoft Solutions Partner status affect the quality and accountability of an ERP implementation?

Microsoft Solutions Partner status creates a layer of accountability that non-partner implementations lack, primarily because partners must maintain their customer success scores to renew their designation annually. A partner whose implementations consistently produce poor outcomes risks losing designation status, which has real commercial consequences: designated partners receive access to higher-tier technical support from Microsoft, preferred visibility in the AppSource marketplace, and co-selling opportunities with Microsoft's direct sales organization. These incentives create a structural reason for partners to care about customer outcomes beyond the immediate project close, which does not exist for undesignated consultancies that face no such ongoing review.

That said, the accountability mechanism works better in theory than in practice for any individual buyer's project. Customer success scores are collected at the account level, not the project level, and a partner can maintain satisfactory aggregate scores while individual projects underperform. The designation system is most useful as a filter to reduce the pool of partners you evaluate, but it is not a substitute for project-level due diligence including direct reference checks with companies in your industry and revenue range, introductions to the actual consultants who would lead your project, and a careful review of how the partner manages scope, timelines, and post-go-live support.

What should you look for beyond Microsoft Solutions Partner designations when evaluating a Dynamics 365 partner?

The certification system provides a starting point, not a final answer. Beyond confirming that a partner holds the relevant designation and, ideally, an Advanced Specialization in your solution area, the evaluation criteria that matter most are industry-specific experience, consultant stability, and reference quality. A partner with twenty Dynamics 365 Business Central implementations in the manufacturing sector brings a level of domain knowledge that no certification can confer. Consultant stability matters because certification counts at the firm level often mask high turnover among the individual consultants who would actually work on your project day to day.

Turnkey Technologies, a Microsoft Solutions Partner based in Chesterfield, Missouri, has focused its practice on mid-market manufacturing and distribution companies in the Dynamics 365 ecosystem for over two decades. Their team works through the full implementation lifecycle and maintains ongoing client relationships well beyond go-live. If you are evaluating Dynamics 365 implementation partners and want to understand how a seasoned team approaches the evaluation conversation, reaching out to Turnkey is a useful benchmark for the questions you should be asking and the answers you should expect.
